Note From The Reverend Leigh Silcox: Goodbye and thank you St. Matthias folks, friends and family
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We have lived, worked, worshiped, prayed, struggled, found joy, humour, delight, new insights, and new friends, together in Christ through the years. The last five years, I have had the privilege and honour of accompanying you in this ministry you have as a congregation, before God. I have been exceptionally blessed by the way you have accepted me as your minister, and have shared your particular lives with me. I will remain forever grateful for the time we have spent together living out our lives and callings here in this place, to God.
As I have preached about before, the only thing that remains, and so remains stable through time, when all is said and done in our finite, imperfect lives, is God. God, who in his love, holds us securely in relationship to him, by his Son and Spirit. And so it has come time for me to move on from St. Matthias to a new congregation where I have been asked to serve in God’s mission of drawing people to him.
I want to thank you all for your relationships with me. I want to thank you for being individual points of light through whom God has shone the light of his grace, filling me, a simple and fragile vessel, with the Spirit of his body, and so of the promise of hope. You’ve taught me what love looks like in the concrete, in so many different ways, not just as I relate to you, but as you relate to your own families, your friends, and one another. You’ve taught me where my strengths and my weaknesses are; where I excel, but so too where I have needed and continue to need to grow.
This is such a tremendous gift to give to a priest. For you see God is not a ‘destination’ for which we are aiming. God, in Jesus Christ came into this world and lived a real human life of relationships through time. The point of our lives, then is not to achieve at a destination; but to open ourselves to grace across a lifetime of relationships. The point of our lives is about process: persevering in receiving, reacting, responding, and enacting the gifts of grace we receive from God as we relate to others, through time. And I am so grateful to have learned these things with you.
I know that the future is uncertain for you as the members of the congregation of St. Matthias. But remember this please: you are not first Paul’s or Apollos’s (or St. Matthias’s!). You are God’s. Not just God’s people; but God’s ministers, God’s witnesses. (1 Corinthians 3:1-9). This means that your work as God’s witnesses, is not done because your time together is coming to a conclusion in its present form. The present form of everything is always passing away as God draws us to him (1 Corinthians 7:31). Do not cling to what was; to do so is to cling to the ways of this world formed too often in frustration and fear. Instead, continue to persevere in the faith God has planted in you. Seek, knock, ask, open up to him wherever you go next; seek his will for you. Ask him: where next Lord? With whom will I serve you; give me the wisdom, the humility and the love to enter into new relationships and to grow, by this, in being able to witness to you.
My greatest thanks and blessings to you,
Leigh+

Sunday Worship June 21: Third Sunday After Pentecost.
Dear friends,
As you may know, Sunday June 21st, is National Indigenous People's Day of Prayer. So this morning our sermon and prayer focus on how God has and continues to work within Indigenous Communities across Canada. While we recognize the good fruits of the sharing and reception of the Gospel within these communities, we also recognize the failure of European Christians to embody the love of God, the fruits of the Holy Spirit, in their mission work, and the long-term repercussions this has had for Indigenous people in Canada.
To find resources for prayer, for learning about justice and reconciliation efforts, and for opportunities to become more involved with other ministries and social initiatives involving indigenous people. Please click here and for a specific toolbox of resources, here.

Our homily for this morning comes from my friend and colleague, The Reverend Leigh Kern, who is an associate priest at St. James Cathedral, as well as being the diocese’s Coordinator of Indigenous Ministries and Reconciliation Animator. A Pastoral Letter from our Area Bishop, Jenny Andison
June 3, 2020
Commemoration of the Martyrs of Uganda, 1886 and 1978
Pastoral Letter to the Parishes of York-Credit Valley
How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?
Or cry out to you, "Violence!" but you do not save?
Habbakuk 1:2
My sisters and brothers in Christ,
I write to you in a time of lament. Over a third of the Psalms are laments, and the apostle Paul says that the entire creation groans (Romans 8:22). The created world in which we live, while beautiful, is contaminated with the broken effects of sin-both our personal sinfulness, but also sinful structures that are built up and sustained by humanity. While death is the ultimate reminder that all is not well with the world, there are many other examples: Covid-19, failed relationships, abuse of creation, loneliness, sexism, homophobia, and racism.
The last few weeks have brutally reminded us of the devasting legacy and present reality of the sin of racism. The deaths of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, Ahmaud Aubery and George Floyd, amongst so many others, have not only shone a light on anti-black violence, but have highlighted the persistent and insidious nature of structural racism, both in the US and in Canada. As a white woman of privilege, while I am aware that the sin of racism infects my own heart, I also acknowledge that I cannot fully understand the impact and effects of racism on my racialized brothers and sisters.
Lament is not simply the shedding of tears, but is crying out to our Heavenly Father in pain. It is prayer, at the invitation of God, to cast our fears, frustrations, and pain on to God, hoping to renew our confidence that in Jesus Christ all things are being made new and the Spirit of God is being poured out on all flesh. As the Bishop of the most racially diverse part of the Diocese of Toronto, I join you in lament over the denial of the full humanity of all God's people, and will continue to work with you to ensure that all people can find hope and mercy in our churches and our neighbourhoods.
I can't breathe were the last words of George Floyd. I can't breathe are the words of many who have been suffocating under the weight of systemic racism and violence for centuries. Racism is smothering the beauty of God's rich and diverse creation, and racism will smother our ability to follow the God of mission in York-Credit Valley. Racism sucks breath and life out of people, and yet having just celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, we know we can be comforted and rejoice with the prophet Job (33:4) that "The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life."
As the current Diversity Officer for the Diocese of Toronto, I am working closely with the Intercultural Committee to bring anti-racism and anti-bias training to our Diocese. Please join me as leaders in York-Credit Valley in taking this training when it becomes available, continue to cry out to God in prayerful lament, listen carefully to the stories of pain and fear within your congregation, donate to verifiable bail or memorial funds, appropriately leverage social media to amplify black voices, and proclaim together that we are siblings in Christ.
Peace,

Sunday Worship May 10th, 2020
This morning we celebrate 100 years of worship as the Congregation of St. Matthias. The small congregation of St. Matthias were originally parishioners of St. Philip's Anglican Church just to the North of our current location on Royal York Road. In 1920, those members were first established as a church plant, intended as a missionary or Christian outreach to the growing community of North Etobicoke.
And of course we would like to wish all of the mothers, grand mothers, great grandmothers, out there a very Happy Mother's Day!
Since it is the celebration of our 100th anniversary, our Bishop, The Rt. Rev'd Jenny Andison, will be preaching the sermon, which you can find here

Good Friday
When you click here, you will find our Gospel Reading for Good Friday captured in narrative form. Typically, we read this long Passion Narrative in parts for our service. Since we cannot do that this year, I thought the pictures that accompany this telling of the Passion will help you to enter into the story of Jesus’s betrayal, his arrest, his trial, his torture and his execution. In order to understand the profound gift that Jesus’s resurrection opens for us both now and for eternity that we’ll celebrate at Easter, we first need to journey with him today, Good Friday. We still recognize Good Friday rather than skipping it and going straight to Easter because we are a people who need to physically embody our faith. So here, as a people who truly are in a state of shock because of COVID, we are brought face-to-face with the stark judgment of the Cross: our finitude, our suffering, our uncertainty. With Peter and Judas we are confronted with the question of whose we are, shall we persevere through the Cross to find hope in the resurrection, or shall we stop and cut ourselves off from the living fountain of life, given in the resurrection? Shall we turn away from God in the things we say and allowing our secular world to pretend power and authority in dictating justice, righteousness, and goodness? Or shall we endure through the cockcrows in our own personal lives? This Good Friday, we are in the position – one unique to most of our lives – to ask deep questions about how we are responding to God. As you read through these passages and look at the accompanying pictures, please don’t rush. Take a moment, consider how you fit into the character of Paul, of Judas, of Pilate, of Jesus’s betrayers, of Jesus’s family, of his disciples? Maybe this stark removal from the normal rhythms of life has brought you to realize that you engage other people with fear of something, rather than in faith that you are loved, held, desired, and given purpose by someone far more powerful than today’s Pilate. Maybe it makes you realize that you run from things because you have been hurt by those who taunt, who betray, who misjudge or mischaracterize you. Is that running really serving you? Or has it left you in the place of Jesus’s people here and Pilate: unable to see truth, to be held in that truth in love, to forgive yourself, or others, and to move on with hope? There are so many ways we fit into all the figures we encounter in this Gospel reading. Take the time to enter into them. And once you’ve done that, take the time to pray to God to give you the capacity to endure the shock of a world turned upside down by COVID, by Good Friday, and the potential it opens to be transformed, pulled up from the grave where sin leaves you, into the Easter Hope we shall celebrate Sunday. AMEN.

Bishop's Pastoral Letter
To the Lay People of York-Credit Valley
My sisters and brothers in Christ,
Two weeks ago, on the feast of St Patrick, I drafted a letter to you, the people of the York-Credit Valley Episcopal Area. The rapidly evolving circumstances prevented me from sending it at that time, but since then, I have been praying for you, concerned for you, and thanking God for you. Today I am expressing my gratitude for your steadfastness and courage in these uncertain times.
At the time of my first writing - a mere fourteen days, and yet what feels like a lifetime, ago - I commented that we were together entering into new territory in terms of what it means to be church.
How quickly that "new territory" has become the "new normal." I have seen such creativity, entrepreneurial spirit, and radical re-imagining in the past weeks as you continue to organise as one body in Christ, even as we remain physically apart. I am amazed, but not surprised, by the variety and diversity by which worship, outreach, and pastoral ministry are continuing in the York-Credit Valley Area and across the Diocese. This is exactly what our faith has always equipped us for - to reach yearning ears and desirous hearts, whether by tried-and-true means or high-tech media solutions. I want to tell you how proud I am of the clergy, staff and lay leaders of our YCV parishes as they have continued to adapt to new expectations and uncertain timelines for parish life.
I have also come to recognize that what feels like new territory for us as the Church is also old, familiar territory. The Church has witnessed social disruption over and over again in its history. While modern institutions scramble to react to the present outbreak, the Church can in fact say, "Been there. Done that." The Black Death, the Spanish Flu, world wars and financial crashes. The Church has known - and seen a way through - plague and pandemic, depression and recession, war and persecution. What's more, these things are a daily fact for many of our brothers and sisters in the Anglican Communion, in countries where epidemic, civil war, and systemic poverty are common realities above and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. While these times are distressing and uncertain for us, we have much to be grateful for with every reason to remain confident in God's unwavering, transforming love for us.
And so I encourage you to continue to commit yourselves in support of your parish family. Pray for your clergy and your churchwardens. Continue to make your regular financial offering, as best as you are able. Remain in touch with members of your church family. Keep the Sabbath by making time and space in your home to worship and pray. Continue to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ, opening your heart to God's shaping power during this strange and unsettling time. Know that God will guide us in ways that may be different and may not always be comfortable for us, but that can still bear fruit and glorify God.
This letter comes with my continued prayers and thanksgiving for you. As we approach Holy Week, let us remember that we are a Resurrection people. We follow a God, who suffers along with us, who knows what it is like to be tested, isolated from loved ones, and stripped of all comforts. But beyond the Cross of Good Friday lies the empty tomb of Easter Sunday, the restoration of a hope that endures all suffering, and the promise of a rise to glory and life everlasting.
Blessings for this extraordinary Holy Week,

Discernment in a Cave (a Prayerful response to the COVID Pandemic)
Need time to reflect, to seek God, to find his reassuring presence with you. Check out this link below for a Jesuit developed Ignatian exercise in prayer and reflection: https://spark.adobe.com/page/HYFrtgRBpJtcv/?fbclid=IwAR2w_yphG7Si7yuwRhpGokWgloEv-pCXC4o6IV33lvBTXauj-sWBcznkfto Thursday February 26: Day of Fasting and Prayer One of the Church’s practices we as a Church have been asked to rediscover this Lent is a time of dedicated prayer and fasting. The College of Bishops is calling for a Day of Prayer and Fasting tomorrow, Thursday, March 26th. Throughout scripture and in the Church’s story, prayer and fasting have been held together as a recognition of our total dependence on God. Our focused abstention from food physically orients us towards an acute awareness of God’s loving provisions for our needs. The call to prayer concentrates our minds and spirits in laying our cares and concerns before God. Time and again, we read in the Bible of people who, in times of great distress or calamity, dedicated themselves to prayer and fasting, lifting up their situation to God in faith, hope and trust. I invite you to do so tomorrow, remembering before God the Covid19 pandemic throughout the world, and how it is affecting all people. Resources to help you are found here . I look forward to sharing this experience with you. Anglican Book of Alternative Services: Morning Prayer In the documents below, so kindly provided by, The Reverend Lucia Lloyd at St. John's in Bowmanville, you can find: 1. A Prayer for this evening:
Compline is an evening service, typically held before you go to bed. It is meant to help relax and focus you. The scriptures remind us that "God grants sleep to those he loves." In a world full of things making people anxious it is important to remember whose hands the future is in. Join us for compline tonight.
Below is a link to the service for tonight if you'd like to join us.

Worship Services Across the Diocese of Toronto are suspended until further notice:
To the Clergy and People of the Diocese of Toronto -
Beloved in Christ:
It is an indication of how quickly things are changing regarding the Covid-19 pandemic that we need to update our message of earlier today.
Since this morning, the Ministry of Health of the Province of Ontario has issued directives that recommend “the immediate suspension of all large events and public gatherings of over 250 people.” In response to this, the Provincial House of Bishops has decided that the time has come to suspend public worship in the Ecclesiastical Province of Ontario, including the Diocese of Toronto. Please see our Metropolitan’s letter here.
Until further notice, and starting Sunday, March 15, 2020, the College of Bishops is cancelling all corporate worship and all other gatherings in our churches. Ministries of service to marginalized and disadvantaged communities may continue using the utmost care, acting consistent with the Ministry of Health directives. (Those licensees and other outside groups who do not fall under our authority may continue to utilise our spaces as agreed, provided that they too are acting consistent with the Ministry of Health directives.)
We make this decision with a heavy heart, not out of a sense of fear but in confidence that it is the right, safe and caring decision to make for the Church, and for the world, at this time.
Although we cannot gather for corporate worship, it has never been more important that we lift our prayers and praises to a merciful God, and to exercise care and charity for ourselves and our neighbours. Please continue in your personal devotions, privately and with your family, particularly on Sunday. Pray for this situation and for those most affected by it, especially the sick. Check in by telephone or email with others, particularly the isolated and vulnerable. I urge the clergy of the Diocese to provide pastoral care and support as best as you are able, using the guidelines already shared earlier.
Finally, we urge the clergy and lay leaders to facilitate worship as much as you are able using the technology available to you. There are many fine worship resources available online, and all of our liturgical texts are posted on the Anglican Church of Canada website. Please help every Anglican to feel connected to their parish family. I am planning to offer a short online service on Sunday morning; a link will be provided soon.

Thanksgiving Sunday: October 13th. This year, as always, were are collecting food items for Youth Without Shelter. Judy Leroux, director at YWS has asked that we not donate Fruits & Veggies this year. The reason being that they receive so much from different sources & end up throwing items away because they have rotted before they can be used & is also very wasteful. She has e-mailed the church a “wish list” of things that are preferable & are not likely to go to waste (this will be available at the back of the sanctuary on October 9th).
Flea Market: Saturday, October 19, with set-up on Friday, Oct. 18 between 5:30 & 6 pm. As usual, much help is needed with set-up, selling & cleanup, by as many helpers as possible & greatly appreciated. Because this is the last flea market for this year, left-over items need to be boxed up & moved to the narthex for pick-up by the Diabetic Association.

Euchre Party: All are invited, you don't have to be a member of the church to come and play! St. Matthias, downstairs in the parish hall at 7:15pm Wednesday October 9th. Fun, fellowship, treats, and a 50/50 draw, all for $5.
Memorial Flowers: Anyone wishing to place flowers on the Altar, as a Memorial to loved ones, can do so any Sunday they wish. Please speak to Irene and she will look after your request.
